- Harry Wu grew up in a wealthy Shanghai family and studied to be a geologist. He spent 19 years in Chinese labour camps and was released in 1976, three years after Mao Tse-tungs death. In 1985 he emigrated to the United States. Since his release from the labour camps, Wu has worked to bring Chinas human-rights abuses to international attention. He returned to China in the 1990s under a new name, and found that things had got even worse. Filming secretly for the BBC and CBS within Chinese borders, he documented abuses that were widespread and systematic, causing the Chinese authorities to denounce him as their No 1 Troublemaker. In this book Wu documents the brutality and scale of the Chinese penal system, the story of his imprisonment and eventual release, and the risks he took in returning to China in 1995.
